Play modes

A pad’s play mode decides what happens when you press and release it. Set it with the Play switch (Trig / Gate / Latch) in the inspector’s PLAY section. Shape, One-shot and Utility pads have a play mode; Load pads don’t.

Mode Press Release
Trigger (default) Plays the whole shape or sample once. Nothing; it plays to the end.
Gate Starts playing and keeps going while you hold the pad. Stops it, using the pad’s release choice.
Latch The first press starts it. The second press stops it, using the same release choice as Gate.

Gate and Latch pads loop their shape or sample for as long as they play, and show a Gate or Latch glyph on the pad face.

A pad keeps the play mode it was pressed with until it’s released, so changing the mode while you hold a pad can’t leave it stuck.

For Utility pads the modes mean something slightly different: Trigger only runs the actions, while Gate and Latch undo them on release or on the second press. See Utility actions.

Next to the Play switch, the release switch sets how a Gate or Latch pad stops. It’s greyed out for Trigger.

Release Shape pads One-shot pads
Cut (default) Cuts the fader. Fades out over the envelope’s release (cuts at once when it’s 0).
Brake Stops the record like a record-stop brake. Brakes on a deck or the Platter output; Mono and Poly one-shots fade out over the envelope’s release instead.
To end Lets the shape finish its current cycle. Lets the sample play on to its End.
Ease back Glides the record back to where the pad started, then carries on from there. Eases back on a deck or the Platter output; Mono and Poly one-shots fade out over the envelope’s release instead.

Ease back pulls the record from wherever it is back to the point where the pad started, on a smooth curve so it lands without a bump. The fader opens so you hear the pull back. Afterwards the deck carries on from that point: parked if its motor is off, spinning up from there if it’s on.

The glide takes the Ease-back time set in the Feel window (250 ms by default). The pad goes dark as soon as you let go, so you can hit it again during the glide.

What a running deck does after a Cut release, whether its record fades back in or stays silent until played again, is set by After a cut in the Feel window. The Brake time also comes from the Feel window. See Feel options.

While the song plays, Gate and Latch Shape pads lock to the song. A looping pad keeps the phase of the grid line it started on, so it stays in time however long you hold or latch it.

To make the stop land on the grid as well, turn on the Rel lamp beside Quant. See Timing, velocity and choke.
