Flanger
The Flanger gives the deck a jet-plane sweep by mixing it with a very short delayed copy whose delay sweeps up and down. It is the sixth unit in the effect rack. Its faceplate is the JF-1 Jet Flanger, and its screen draws the moving comb-filter curve.
The left and right channels sweep a quarter of a cycle apart, so the sweep moves across the stereo field.
Controls
Section titled “Controls”| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rate | 0.02 Hz to 5 Hz | 0.25 Hz | Sweep speed while Sync is Free. |
| Sync | Free, 1/4, 1/2, Bar, 2 Bars, 4 Bars, 8 Bars | Free | Free uses Rate. The other choices lock one full sweep to that length of the song. |
| Depth | 0 to 100% | 70% | How wide the sweep is. |
| Fdbk | -95% to +95% | +50% | Feeds the delayed sound back into itself. More feedback gives a sharper, more metallic sweep. Negative values give a hollower tone. |
| Mix | 0 to 100% | 60% | Balance between the dry deck and the flanged sound. |
When Sync is set to a note or bar length, the sweep follows the song position, so it lines up with the beat and stays in the same place every time the song plays through. The strip’s readout shows the Sync setting, or the Rate when Sync is Free.
Using it
Section titled “Using it”- Build-ups. Set Sync to 4 Bars or 8 Bars on the beat deck for a slow sweep that rises and falls in time with the phrase.
- Metallic scratches. Push Fdbk towards +95% for a ringing, robotic flange on the scratch deck. Try negative values for a hollow, nasal colour.
- Fast warble. A Sync of 1/4 gives one sweep per beat, a rhythmic wobble that locks to the groove.
