Fader keys

Scratching takes two hands: one on the record and one on the fader. With a mouse you only have one pointer, so ScratchCraft lets your other hand cut on the keyboard. Drag a platter with the mouse and tap the fader keys to open and close the decks.

Key While held
Z Opens deck A.
/ Opens deck B.
Z and / together Open both decks.
X Cuts both decks.

The keys are momentary: they only act while you hold them. While any of them is held, they replace the crossfader completely, ignoring its position, its curve and Reverse. Let go of all of them and the crossfader takes over again.

The fader keys work only on the Mix tab, and only while ScratchCraft’s window has keyboard focus. The Mix view takes focus when you switch to it. If the keys stop working, click an empty part of the Mix view to give it focus again.

The keys are ignored while Ctrl, Shift, Alt or another modifier is held, so they don’t get in the way of shortcuts.

Fader key cuts are sent straight to the audio engine rather than moving the crossfader parameter. That means:

  • Record Take does record them, so the cuts show up in the new shape’s fader lane.
  • Host automation doesn’t: the crossfader parameter never moves, so recording automation in your DAW won’t capture your key cuts.

If you want your cuts in the DAW’s automation, use the crossfader itself or a MIDI fader mapped to it.
