One-shots
A One-shot pad plays a sample straight through with the fader open, like a drum pad or sampler. Use one-shots for vocal stabs, hits, horns and loops you want to fire in time, either through a deck or on their own voice off the decks.
To make one, set the pad’s mode to One-shot, or just drop an audio file on a Shape pad: it loads the sample and switches to One-shot.
How a one-shot plays
Section titled “How a one-shot plays”A one-shot plays the pad’s own sample between its Start and End markers. Without a sample of its own, it plays the deck’s sample between the deck’s cue and end markers.
- Trigger plays once and stops at End.
- Gate and Latch loop between Start and End for as long as the pad plays, with a smooth crossfade across the loop point however short the loop is.
A one-shot is timed in seconds, so a tempo change never moves the needle. It always plays at rate 1x, so the inspector hides Rate; use Speed and Pitch instead.
Start and End
Section titled “Start and End”For a pad with its own sample, set Start and End on the inspector’s waveform. Drag a marker, or click a marker and use the arrow keys to nudge it. Hold Shift for a fine drag and Ctrl to turn off snapping. Double-click a marker or its readout to type a time, or Alt+double-click a marker to reset it.
Start at and End at
Section titled “Start at and End at”A one-shot on deck A or B without its own sample can choose where on the deck’s sample it starts and stops:
| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| Start | Cue (default): the deck’s cue. Point: a start point of the pad’s own on the deck’s sample. Needle: wherever the needle is when you press the pad, so Gate and Latch loop back to that spot. |
| End | Deck (default): the deck’s end marker. Point: an end point of the pad’s own on the deck’s sample (it starts at the deck’s end when you first choose it). Length: a musical length after the start, from 1/32 to 4 Bars (default 1/4), so a Gate or Latch loop lasts exactly that long. |
With Point, the inspector shows the deck’s sample with both markers: drag them to set the points, or Alt+double-click to put one back on the deck’s cue or end. An end before the start falls back on the deck’s end. When a one-shot reaches its end point, the deck carries on as the Feel window’s Resume option says.
Reverse and Ignore crossfader
Section titled “Reverse and Ignore crossfader”Two lamps sit under the waveform:
- Rev plays the sample backwards, from End to Start. The pad face shows REV.
- XF (Ignore crossfader) keeps the one-shot audible wherever the crossfader is. It applies to one-shots on deck A or B, and the pad face shows XF.
Output
Section titled “Output”The Output switch decides where the one-shot plays:
| Output | What it does |
|---|---|
| A, B | Plays on that deck, through its fader, crossfader, Mixer EQ and filters, and effects. Without its own sample it rides the deck’s speed. |
| Mono | Plays on its own voice, off the decks. A new press restarts it. |
| Poly | Plays on its own voices, so presses overlap. When all voices are busy the oldest is reused; Poly voices in the Feel window caps how many can play at once. |
| Platter | Plays on a hidden third turntable shared by all Platter pads, one sound at a time, so the Brake release works. |
Mono, Poly and Platter need the pad’s own sample; without one the pad does nothing. Their sound is mixed after the crossfader, before the master gain. The pad face shows M, P or PL for them.
Pan, Filter and Res
Section titled “Pan, Filter and Res”For Mono, Poly and Platter one-shots the SOUND section adds:
- Pan: where the pad sits between left and right. Double-click to centre.
- Filter: one knob, off at the centre. Turn left to sweep a lowpass down from 20 kHz, right to sweep a highpass up from 20 Hz.
- Res: the filter’s resonance.
One-shots on A or B use the deck’s own EQ and filters instead.
Platter Brake
Section titled “Platter Brake”A Platter one-shot has a Brake row in SOURCE: how long the hidden turntable takes to stop when a Brake release stops it, from 50 to 2000 ms (default 250 ms). It replaces the Feel window’s brake time for that pad.
Speed and Pitch
Section titled “Speed and Pitch”| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | 0.25x to 4x | 1x | The one-shot’s tempo, without changing its note. Double-click for 1x. |
| Pitch | -12 to +12 semitones | 0 | The one-shot’s note, without changing its tempo. |
On deck A or B, both work on top of the deck’s speed. Mono and Poly one-shots follow a Speed change at once. On a deck or the Platter the new tempo arrives once it has been rendered in the background, and the note stays right meanwhile.
A pad with its own sample has a Key row: it shifts the pad’s sample up or down by -12 to +12 semitones without changing its length. The shifted copy is rendered in the background, and until it’s ready the pad plays sped up or slowed down. Double-click for 0. Turn on Deck key to use the target deck’s Key instead, so the pad stays in key with the deck. See Key and pitch.
Envelope
Section titled “Envelope”Under the knobs, one-shots have an ADSR envelope: Atk (attack), Dec (decay), Sus (sustain) and Rel (release). Attack, decay and release run up to 5 s; sustain is a level in percent. You can also drag the points on the curve; double-click a point or knob to reset it, and hold Alt to drag finely. The curve lights while the pad plays.
The defaults (0, 0, 100%, 0) leave the sound untouched.
- Trigger runs the attack and decay, then holds the sustain level until End.
- Gate (on release) and Latch (on the second press) with the Cut release fade out over the release time.
- A choke always cuts at once, ignoring the release.
