Chorus
The Chorus makes the deck sound wide and shimmering by blending it with a slightly delayed copy whose delay time wobbles slowly. It is the fifth unit in the effect rack. Its faceplate is the CH-2 Stereo Chorus, and its screen draws the modulation wave.
The left and right channels wobble a quarter of a cycle apart, which spreads the sound across the stereo field.
Controls
Section titled “Controls”| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rate | 0.05 Hz to 5 Hz | 0.6 Hz | Speed of the wobble. |
| Depth | 0 to 100% | 50% | How far the delay time swings, and so how strong the pitch wobble is. |
| Delay | 5 ms to 30 ms | 12 ms | Base delay of the copy. Short delays sound tighter; longer ones sound more like a second voice. |
| Mix | 0 to 100% | 50% | Balance between the dry deck and the delayed copy. |
At the default Mix of 50% you hear the dry deck and the copy equally, which gives the classic chorus sound. Unlike the Flanger, Phaser and Auto-Pan, the Chorus has no tempo sync: it always runs at its Rate.
The strip’s readout shows the Rate.
Using it
Section titled “Using it”- Widen a mono sample. Most scratch samples are mono. A gentle chorus (low Rate, moderate Depth) spreads them out so they don’t sit as a single point in the middle of the mix.
- Thicken pads and tones. On sustained sounds, a longer Delay with more Depth gives a lush, doubled sound.
- Seasick. A fast Rate with high Depth gives an obvious vibrato-like wobble, which can be fun on long, slow scratches.
