Auto-Pan

Auto-Pan moves the deck from side to side across the stereo field. It is the ninth unit in the effect rack. Its faceplate is the AP-2 Auto Panner, and its screen shows a ball moving between left and right.

Control Range Default What it does
Rate 0.05 Hz to 10 Hz 1.00 Hz Panning speed while Sync is Free.
Sync Free, 1/4, 1/2, Bar, 2 Bars, 4 Bars, 8 Bars Free Free uses Rate. The other choices lock one full left-right-left cycle to that length of the song.
Depth 0 to 100% 100% How far the sound moves. At 100% it travels all the way to each side.
Shape Sine, Triangle, Square Sine How the sound moves: smoothly (Sine), at an even speed (Triangle), or jumping between the sides (Square).
Mix 0 to 100% 100% Balance between the unpanned deck and the panned sound.

Square jumps are slightly smoothed so they don’t click. With Sync on a note or bar length, the movement follows the song position, so it lines up with the beat. The strip’s readout shows the Sync setting, or the Rate when Sync is Free.

Auto-Pan comes before the deck’s own Pan, so the deck’s Pan still sets where the movement is centred.

  • Ping-pong scratches. Square with Sync at 1/4 throws the scratch to alternate sides on every beat.
  • Slow drift. Sine with Sync at 2 Bars or 4 Bars and Depth around 40% keeps a loop gently moving without pulling attention away from the scratch.
  • Tremolo-style motion. A fast Rate (several Hz) with Sine makes the sound shimmer between the speakers rather than travel.
